Sustainability matters. This topic has become one of the key messages of this new decade. We’re sure you’ve spent time thinking about and maybe even acting on reducing waste, living sustainably, using plastic-free alternatives in day-to-day living… Well, you’re in good company, because so have we!
We’re sure you were as shocked as us by some of the statistics on plastic waste. Globally, we produce over 300 million tonnes of plastic every year, 50% of which are for single-use purposes. Out of this, 8 million tonnes of plastic waste escapes into the oceans every year. These numbers – while shocking – don’t even highlight the gravity of the situation. Plastic has a detrimental effect on our flora and fauna. Millions of animals die each year due to plastic, mainly due to entanglement or starvation. Over 90% of seabirds have plastic pieces in their stomachs and nearly 700 species have been affected by plastic.
But all hope is not lost! Countless initiatives have been launched around the world to tackle our plastic crisis. From large corporations to small businesses, from governments to individuals, it seems many people are making an effort to reduce plastic waste. To set the scene: in 2018 the EU parliament approved a ban on single use plastic, Seattle became the first city to ban plastic straws and utensils in restaurants and Carlsberg announced they will no longer use plastic rings on beer cans. New companies with the sole purpose of reducing plastic waste are being formed everyday, examples being the vastly popular 4Ocean, which sells bracelets produced out of recycled plastics, as well as local companies like Ireland Beeswax Wraps.
